Self Help

Have you ever read a self-help book in your life?

You know, the kind of books which claim that they will change your life and how you look at the world. By the time you are done reading the book you will be able to live your life the way you want to. The ones that tell you - they will broaden your horizons, give you the tools to success and what not.

Have they actually helped you?

I’m not sure how you’ll answer this question. I am mostly just writing from my own experience here. I have never been a big fan of such books. You see, they come from the perspective of someone who had a problem and has overcome it. Sometimes it comes from the perspective of a person who has done a great deal of research on the problem and is offering you the solution. While the person reading it is in a hole so deep that they don’t know whether they’ll ever be able to get out.

Most people who have problems in their life know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. In some cases, there are people that keep reminding them of that. But once you are overwhelmed, it doesn’t matter. All the logic and practicality goes out the window. Hanging in there and getting out is not easy. It takes a lot of character and strength. Those who have it, get over it and write books about it. Those who don’t, well, life isn’t fair.

Maybe I haven’t found the right book. For once, I would like to read the perspective of the person who is writing from within the hole that he is trapped in. I don’t want to know how he beats his problems. I want to know what he is feeling on a daily basis and where he is finding the strength to cling on.

A while ago, I came across one such individual. I told them that I understand what they are going through. The person looked me dead in my eyes and told me-“You have known me for ten minutes, how can you understand what I’m going through when I don’t understand it myself.”
