Do you have nightmares?

I am not talking about dreams, a nightmare is the evil twin that wakes you up at 3 am. Dreams are usually pleasant, even silly on some occasions. Nightmares make kids scream, and adults weep.

I have had nightmares since I was a little kid. It is normal apparently to have them when you are growing up. There were some that kept repeating themselves though, over and over again. In one instance, a man was trying to break into my house. I would get up to investigate the noise and see a hand trying to open the door. When I got closer to the door, I could see him. I would hold on to the latch, as he kept trying to pull the door open. The latch slipped from my hand and I would wake up, drenched in sweat. I must have had this nightmare more than a 100 times.

As I grew older though, they stopped. I had uninterrupted sleep, for a long period of time. I wouldn’t even have dreams. Then one day out of the blue, they started again. This time though, there were only a couple of nightmares that kept repeating themselves. In one instance, I was on my roof, surrounded by giant tornadoes that were about to pull me in. In the other one, I was being choked.

My curiosity to understand my strange nightmares led me down an internet wormhole that was filled with numerous explanations. Tales of being repressed, emotional upheaval were aplenty. You see, dreams and nightmares are an abstract reflection of your reality and subconscious. I was advised by strangers to maintain a dream journal and consult a Guru. I understood though that they were linked to my real life issues, and I would have to work on them to get rid of these interruptions to my sleep.

As my real life issues escalated, I decided to get help. I still have nightmares from time to time but more often than that I have silly dreams nowadays - Like being naked in public.
